ROARING SUCCESS FOR CHAIRTY FIREWALK
Patrons of a Lancashire pub walked across fire and hot coals to raise money for a children’s cancer charity.
The Elletson Arms, Pilling, hosted a sponsored firewalk which helped raise £2000 for the charity Little Heroes. The unusual event was spearheaded by licensees Julie Kingham and Mick Keeler in conjunction with the Shipley based charity.
“We suggested the firewalk to some of our locals in November”, recalls Julie. “We wanted to celebrate our one year anniversary at the pub by holding an event that would benefit others. We honestly thought we would be lucky to get one volunteer who was crazy enough to walk across fire but to our surprise we had a number of interested parties!”
The day began with a safety briefing and a tipple of Robinsons’ Unicorn for a little Dutch courage.
The walk turned out to be a roaring success and despite several volunteers, ironically, getting cold feet the night before, thirteen brave walkers tiptoed across the scorching coals to help raise over £1900 in sponsorship.
The community came out in droves to cheer participants as they battled through the flames and across the finish line.
“The pub was absolutely packed. You couldn’t move!” said Julie. “The highlight of the evening was seeing a member of the Pilling Silver Jubilee Band playing a few notes on his tuba as he walked across the hot coals. I was so proud of all our volunteers, particularly our local Vicar who also braved the heat.”
“We want to thank Robinsons Brewery,” said Mick, “they kindly donated a barrel of Unicorn ale, which allowed us to raise even more money for the charity on the sales of beer. We even had a special firewalker pump clip made to commemorate the event.”
Colin Nesbitt who is the founder of Little Heroes Cancer Trust and personally managed the fire walking event said, “We are thrilled with the amount raised by Julie and Mick and the whole team at The Elletson Arms. Charity fire walking is a great spectacle to watch! £2000 will buy a mountain of toys and put a lot of smiles on the children’s faces.”
