Derby Brewing Company launch annual Charity Appeal

The Derby Brewing Company is proud to announce the return of their January Charity Appeal: Eat, Drink, Donate.

First introduced last year, and offering an alternative to the national ‘Dry-January’ appeal, Eat, Drink, Donate offers the people of Derby the chance to continue supporting the vital Great British Brewing Industry, whist raising money for 2 incredible local-borne charities, all whilst having fun. Last year, the month long appeal raised over £700 for charity, along with raising the awareness of the fantastic work the volunteers do.

Derby Brewing Company have again pledged to donate 2% of the value of every main meal sold in their pubs throughout January to Derby Nightshelter, and 2p from every Derby Brewing Company pint sold to Derby Lions.

The brewing industry is vital to Derby as a source of high employment and driving the economy for the City and surrounding areas. Derby is highly regarded throughout the world for its award-winning brewers and fantastic pubs. The 2011 edition of ‘The Lonely Planet Guide’ describes Derby as, ‘The best place to drink Real Ale in the World’, whilst Derby’s Annual Beer Census confirmed the city as the ‘Real Ale Capital of Britain’ per population head (Source: Derby Camra) In fact, Derbyshire now has more brewers than any other County.

However, multiple Dry January campaigns, seek to encourage people to go tee-total for the whole month – driving people out of our pubs, and consequently hitting the much-needed Derby breweries and pubs hard at an already quiet time of the year.

Derby Brewing Company wanted to create a way for people to continue supporting the local pubs and breweries, getting out to enjoy yourself with friends, whilst doing your bit for charity. So Eat, Drink and Donate!

For every DBC pint enjoyed at any of the three stunning Derby pubs – the award-winning The Tap, The Greyhound, and The Queen’s Head – and this year, the newly opened Kedleston Country House, 2p will be donated to Derby Lions.

Phil Morton, Nightshelter Project Manager
‘Derby Churches Nightshelter are pleased to announce for a second year the support of Derby Brewing Company. As a homeless winter nightshelter which relies solely on donations, companies getting behind us and supporting us is a real blessing. Last year the nightshelter was able to offer 274 different people a bed for at least one night, although some stayed for longer. The last two winters no one has died on the streets of Debry, or has to sleep on the streets. We are hoping with your support this will be the case again this year. Many Thanks for supporting us, and supporting Derby Brewing Company in such a great campaign.’

Founded in September, 1973 Derby Lions is a group of local people who together with their spouses give freely of their time to raise money that is used mainly for distribution to those in need in the Derby area. Fundraising projects have included purchasing the first ever “Flying Squad” ambulance in 1976; A Minibus to Derby Association for the Blind; Over £45,000 to the Rainbows Children’s Hospice; 20,000 Mathematics kits to Derby Schoolchildren; Portable Dialysis machines for the City Hospital; An operating table for the Children’s Hospital.

Dave Bower, Secretary, Derby Lions
‘Derby Lions is very pleased to be able to join with the Derby Brewing Company in this innovative project to raise funds to help local people in need.’

Derby Brewing Company is not only renowned for their National award-winning drinks, they are highly regarded for great fresh food too. All main meals sold throughout January in the beautiful surroundings of Derby Brewing Company pubs and boutique hotel and restaurant will have 2% of the value donated direct to Derby Nightshelter.
Using local ingredient suppliers wherever possible, Derby Brewing Company have become a real destination for good food. Menus offer something a little different as well as all the old favorites, plus a constantly changing specials board to keep their chefs on their toes! All food is super fresh, all homemade, locally sourced and cooked to order on site.
Derby Nightshelter was founded last winter to meet the urgent need for safe accommodation for Derby’s Street Homeless, following the announcement in April 2013 from Derby City Council of 85% funding cuts to the homeless over 2 years. Eight church venues in or near the City Centre, open one night per week in rotation through December 2014 to March 2015, providing a warm welcome and hot meal to those in need. With running costs this winter expected to exceed £75,000 funds are vital to ensure food and shelter can be provided during the bitter winter months.

Eat, Drink, Donate is set to be a fun way for the people of Derby to enjoy themselves and raise money for great local charities.

Paul Harris, Director. Derby Brewing Company
‘After the success of last year we really wanted to build on it, this year we have been able to make it even more local by working with two Derby charities, so the money raised will be spent right here in Derby. We are really pleased that so many people chose to raise money by working positively with the Derby’s pub and brewing industry, enjoying beer brewed here in Derby and locally sourced food. We hope to donate even more this year!’

Trevor Harris, Founder, Derby Brewing Company
‘We were really chuffed with the success of last year, It’s great to support local charities whilst being able to continue to celebrate what Derby’s become famous for. Here’s to great real ale and food. We couldn’t think of a better way to raise money for charity!’
