West Berkshire Brewery (WBB) have added three new awards to their ever expanding trophy cabinet. Two gold awards were won at the Society of Independent Brewers Association (SIBA) South East competition on Friday 8th July. The craft brewery were also champion of the Imbibe Live Wheat Beer Challenge 2016 which took place at Olympia, London.
The SIBA south east competition had more than 125 entries into the small pack category in which Tamesis Extra Stout and Maggs’ Magnificent Mild both came out winning gold awards. The competition was judged by over 90 beer experts made up of fellow brewers, supplier associates, members of the press, local CAMRA members and beer enthusiasts.
Will Twomey, Head Brewer from WBB says, “We are very proud of our range of beers and this achievement is a testament to the teams’ hard work and dedication”.
In a whirlwind few weeks WBB are also thrilled to announce that new brew, Wheaty McWheatface, has won the Imbibe Live Wheat Beer Challenge. Over 34 contestants from up and down the country had been whittled down to five by an expert judging panel in the first round. It was then up to the audience at Imbibe Live to pick the overall winner.
‘He nailed the wheat style,’ said chair of judges Mark Dorber, the show’s beer and cider ambassador, adding: ‘The balance was exemplary. It was crisp, fresh and spoke of English material.’
Wheaty McWheatface was named by the drinkers following the brewery’s ‘#nameourbeer’ competition on Twitter. Although many suggested the name, first out of the blocks was James Moore who won a case of the 4.2% wheat beer.
CEO Simon Lewis said “To be crowed winner amongst such great competition from the other finalists was tremendous. This is a testament to the brewing skills of our young, energetic and experienced brewing team led by Will. Our intentions are to let the team continue to experiment with beer styles and collaborations to develop a range of limited edition bottles.”
West Berkshire Brewery wins a pair of tickets to visit Pilsner Urquell brewery in the Czech Republic, as well as a seasonal listing at a selection of Mitchells and Butlers leading pubs for Wheaty McWheatface.
