Robinsons announce new environmentally friendly bottle for legendary Old Tom Beer
The new bottle, designed in partnership with Beatson Clark and Rawlings, uses less glass whilst retaining its 330ml volume.
“We’ve made a lot of changes over the past 18 months” said Graeme Hall, Operations and Packaging Manager for Robinsons Brewery. “We’ve installed an energy efficient brew house, a brand new pasteuriser and now we are moving towards a lighter bottle which will have a lessened impact on the environment.”
By reducing the overall weight from 282g to 250g, the new lightweight bottle will cut the amount of glass used by over 3 tonnes per year.
“The benefits of light-weighting, in terms of cost reduction and environmental impact, are significant” said Tom Wood, Managing Director at Rawlings. “Going through the process also allows you to look at manufacturing efficiencies. In Old Tom’s case we were able to use improved embossing technology to improve the clarity of the bottle while making it easier to manufacture.”
Lynn Sidebottom, Sales & Marketing Director at Beatson Clark, added: “The bottle shape and the embossing design are the same as before, so consumers will continue to recognise the distinctive Old Tom bottle. Reducing the weight of a container does not affect quality but will mean fewer raw materials are used during the manufacturing process and the weight of transporting the packaged goods is also lower, resulting in a significantly reduced impact on the environment.”
The superior dark ale is recognised internationally and has won some of the industry’s most prestigious awards including the WBA (World Beer Awards) Worlds Best Ale in 2007 and 2009 for original Old Tom and Europe’s Best Herb and Spice Beer in 2013 for Ginger Tom.
Old Tom is available in Morrisons, Booths, Waitrose, Bookers and Parfetts across the North West, as well as Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Nisa across the UK.
