UK Champion Homebrewer’s Beer is pouring in flagship London pub this weekend

A ‘smooth and fruity’ stout by the UK’s Champion Homebrewer has gone on sale at The Pembury Tavern in Hackney this weekend – the flagship pub of renowned London brewer Five Points, where the beer was commercially brewed.
Stuart Hubbard’s oatmeal stout ‘Meteor’ was named the best homebrew beer in the UK at the prestigious SIBA Homebrew Beer Awards 2025, a competition judged by professional brewers and experienced beer judges from the Society of Independent Brewers and Associates (SIBA). As well as the plaudits of being named the best in the UK and receiving an award in front of the professional brewing community, the prize included having the beer brewed on a commercial scale at Five Points Brewing Co in Hackney.

Speaking to Champion Homebrewer Stuart Hubbard on the brew day at Five Points he had this to say;
“Greg and the team here at Five Points have been super welcoming, and the brew has gone off without a hitch – I can’t wait for people to try it. The beer itself is an oatmeal stout which I’ve evolved over time, but the idea behind it is to get a stout that has those subtle chocolate and coffee flavours backed up by fruit flavours of raisin and fig. Something that is smooth and fruity, and at four and a half percent really nice and sessionable.”
SIBA Head of Public Affairs Barry Watts congratulated Stuart on his win;
“I think beer drinkers coming to The Pembury this weekend would never guess that the latest beer on the bar from Five Points was designed and brewed by a homebrewer, such is the quality of the beer that Stuart has created. It really is a delicious stout and Stuart should be hugely proud of being named the best in the UK in what was a high-calibre competition.”
For the 2025 SIBA Homebrew Beer Awards, SIBA teamed up with malt specialists Crisp Malt, The Malt Miller and leading London brewery Five Points to challenge homebrewing members to brew the UK’s most alluring British Dark Beer – entries came in a variety of styles such as Dark Mild, Stout, Porter and Red Ale.
Five Points Co-Founder and Director of Brewing Greg Hobbs tells us a little bit more about the brewing;
“We’ve brewed this on our pilot kit so it’s going to be a pretty limited edition release, but it allows us to play around and try new beer styles that we might not otherwise be able to do – like Stuart’s great oatmeal stout. We’re going to have just three casks of the beer available at The Pembury Tavern this weekend, so get down there and try it!.”
Now in its third year after launching in 2023, the competition challenged homebrewers to brew a British Dark Beer in any style which, in celebration of it’s 60th anniversary, must use the iconic British Maris Otter malt. Five Points, The Malt Miller and Crisp Malt were official partners of the competition, with Crisp providing the malts needed for a 19 litre homebrew batch to each entrant via The Malt Miller free of charge for all SIBA Homebrew Members.
The SIBA Homebrew Beer Awards 2026 will open for entries later this year and is only open to SIBA Homebrewer Members. For more information on SIBA Homebrewer Membership visit www.siba.co.uk/homebrewer
